What's the 'best' diet for fat loss?



The fitness industry is a jungle and honestly, it’s been like this for a while. Nutrition advice is constantly changing which can make understanding what’s optimal for our bodies a serious challenge. From global trends like ‘Fat will make you fat’ in the 1990’s to the emergence of high-fat diets such as Ketogenic or ‘Keto’ in 2018, it can get pretty confusing. Now these changing messages come from a good place. Improving our understanding of nutritional science and important research in the field will never be a bad thing. However, that doesn’t make you feel better when everyone is telling you something different and you still can’t lose those last few pounds. Which leads me nicely to my point - there is no ‘best’ diet.

Diet is defined in the dictionary as ‘the kinds of food that a person, animal or community habitually eats.’ Now the key word here is “habitually”. Most people see a diet as a quick fix to help them lose some holiday weight or “that bit around my middle”. However, our diet is actually just the food we consume over a much longer period of time. This quick fix diet mindset leads people to going from eating crisps and chocolate every day to eating kale for every meal and working out three times a day. Ultimately, it's just not sustainable people fall off the wagon, say it's not working and go back to their normal "diet". This is where the binge-restrict cycle of jumping from fad to fad begins…sound familiar? Don’t worry you’re not alone. The truth is whether you’re doing Keto, Atkin’s, weight watchers, High carb or carnivore they all do the same thing…create a calorie deficit. Don’t believe me? The reality is a ‘diet’ that creates a calorie deficit and meets your needs as an individual is all you need to lose fat. If you can’t stick to it for longer than a week then you know it’s probably not the one for you.


So, anyone trying to sell you a £30 meal plan and exercise routine is probably looking to make a fast buck and doesn’t really care about you or your goals. There are so many factors that contribute to making you an individual and no cookie cutter meal plan can account for that. Finding out what works best for you is the most important thing and if that happens to be different from someone else, then that’s perfectly ok.
